Usually I'm hesitant to stop at a gas station to use the bathroom, let alone to eat something. But whenever passing through Monroe in the morning, I make a point of stopping at the Red Barn Texaco for some sweet breakfast treats.
No joke, this place has the best apple fritters around -- fresh, flavorful, and substantial! In fact, all the donuts are pretty good. What's the secret? There is a bakery in the back, behind the gas station, where they make donuts fresh every morning except Sunday. (On Sundays, hold out a bit further for the Sultan Bakery, the next best substitute on Highway 2.)
The donuts can sell out rapidly, and are almost always gone by mid to late morning. So get there early, or you'll be disappointed! As you drive through Monroe, heading East towards the mountains, this place is the second Texaco you see. It's on the left-hand side. (The first Texaco is on the right hand side; it's owned by the same folks, and usually they bring a small plate of donuts down there to sell too.) If you are really concerned about getting your sugar fix, call ahead and reserve your donuts the night before, (360) 794-5703. Seriously, I've done it!
Well, the secret's out. Enjoy!
