Roy Monier

photo by Seth PollackIn December 2001, our friend Roy Monier was climbing in Equador, apparently doing well and having a great time, when he collapsed suddenly and died of heart attack.

Long an avid backcountry skier, Roy climbed Mt Baker and Mt Rainier with the Bellevue Community College climbing class, then successfully completed The Mountaineers Basic Climbing class. He participated in many Bushwhacker outings including Mount Rose in the Olympics, Ruby Mountain, Glacier Peak and Icy Peak in the North Cascades.

A family man, Roy loved his wife and two boys, and spoke of them when in the mountains. He often made a connection with other climbers when discussing the balance of climbing and family.

His good nature and ability made him a loved and respected member of our climbing community. That he climbed mountains for the joy of it was obvious and infectious. The Bushwhackers celebrate Roy and our time spent with him in the North Cascades.
