Winter camping and backpacking is often full of hardship with little reward - the pack is much heavier, the going is much slower and more treacherous, the views are often minimal or nonexistent, the nights are very very long, and it's either brutally cold or just miserable and wet. Despite these things, there is a certain charm to winter camping - you can pitch the tent anywhere and make yourself a level platform while not permanently terraforming or destroying vegetation. You can cut switchbacks, or better yet, not even follow the trail.  And sometimes those rare but wonderful good weather days come along - then the payoff is more than worth the hardships.

I know a lot of climbers can only think pizza after coming off the Emmons, but here we always head for a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican place -- which BTW just happens to be right next to 31 Flavors.

Avalanche Beacon Practice, Feb 7

user-pic
Jared is leading an avalanche beacon practice session, February 7 at Alpental.  Says Jared:

There will be an Avalanche Beacon Practice club outing on Saturday, February 7th, at Alpental.  This will be a chance for those who are rusty with their beacon search skills to get some practice, as well as provide an introduction to those who do not have experience with beacon search techniques.  Carrying and knowing how to use a beacon is an important skill for the backcountry traveler venturing into avalanche terrain.

Mount Catherine Loop, Feb 7

user-pic
Fred R is taking out some folks on a club outing, the Mount Catherine Loop, Saturday February 7.  Says Fred:

Hello All, The Mt. Catherine loop is 15 kilometers and follows the Snoqualmie Nordic Center trails.  We would start at the Silver Fir lift parking lot at 9:00 am.  Normally we would start from Hyak but the lift was damaged in the recent slide.

You need to bring a day pack with puffy coat and extra clothes plus lunch. The entire loop usually takes 3 to 4 hours at a relaxed pace, including lunch.   The group is limited to 6 plus myself.  Please respond to my email to the club if you want to go.  Once we get a list together we can arrange for carpooling.

Milano's, Glacier

user-pic

Most places we eat at after coming out of "them thar hills" are... well...... just ok. I mean that I wouldn't necessarily eat there if the restaurant was a block from my house.  However, once in a while we come across a place that actually has delicious food. Milano's, in Glacier, Wa. is such a place.

The Bushwhacker, Port Angeles

OK .. so a friend when hearing about our plans and encouraging us to go .. says, "you should have a blast up at Ruth." Hmmm from whose perspective I started to wonder as time went on ... obviously his .. a skier ... this being a grand playground; but for us with boots .. more like work ... though we did have our moments of pure joy for sure ...

Mount Rainier via Emmons!

user-pic
girl power summit.jpg
We love Mount Rainier! Carla led the climb from Rope Up Rock to the summit - good job Carla! On her rope team were Laurie, Emily and Lisa, while Randy led the rope team including Joe, Scott and Doxey. We had a great time on the Emmons Glacier - lots of cracks and not many rest stops - a tough hike for sure. But it was certainly rewarding to visit the summit with friends.

West Ridge of Forbidden

Seth, Anna, Jim and Phil climbed the West Ridge of Forbidden - hey, impressive! Everyone had a great time and agreed the famous west ridge was an awesome climb. Says Phil,
The ridge climb was solid and very fun, with only one crux section that really tested our rock climbing skills. The rest was very low fifth class and the weather was perfect up there - short sleeves, sunshine and a mild breeze to cool the heat.

Dox and Seth at Castle Rock

On August 27, buddies Seth and Doxey climbed Castle Rock. The pair climbed The Fault and Catapult on Lower CR, then after lunch tackled the historic Midway. Seth did all the leading except for one pitch - way to go Seth! Afterward, Doxey reported, "We clumb it."

Katie climbs NR of Adams

user-pic
Adams glacier.jpg
Katie and her pal climbed the North Ridge of Adams a few weeks ago. Kaite says,
Hiked up the loose volcanic scree up spine of the Adams north ridge, taking in awesome views of the very-crevassed Adams glacier, and Mt. Rainier and Mt, St. Helens in the distance. The last mile of the hike is the summit ice cap with an easy grade of snow and ice to the summit. Mark is a geologist so I learned a lot about fumaroles and the cooling patterns of lava. The summit was socked in but all in all it was an awesome climb!

Snowking

user-pic

Wow, Snowking is so beautiful! Doxey, Laurie, Carla, Chris K., Randy and Katie - plus Logan the Wonder Dog - scrambled up Snowking on Saturday. Great fun, despite the rain. Those lakes are sublime, and the company was fantastic. Good times

Eldorado summit!

user-pic
eldoradosummit.JPG
Fred and his team went to the summit of Eldorado on weekend of August 1. Joe, Doug and Randy rounded out the fine team. Said Joe,
The actual glacier climb was pretty mellow. I liked the ridge up at the summit though. It was just enough to get the adrenaline going bit! Great weather and great climbing buddies made it a great trip!

Bushwhacker Talk - New Website Section

user-pic

Dox -- We need to add a new main section to the website navigation. The name we suggest is "Bushwhacker Talk - Stuff for Club Members". The section will contain all the things we have been talking about for the eNewsletter.

Subnav for this major section would be:

  • Reports From the Field
  • Gear Talk
  • Restaurant Reviews
  • Take Your Best Shot (photos)
  • Great Reads (book and movie reviews)
  • Events (outside the club)
  • Gear Swap/Sale
  • Grab Bag

We can work on the names and the order, but you get the idea. How's that sound to you?
