BWCC Revegetation Work at MRNP

user-pic

Here is a trip report from Patrick S, who spearheaded club participation in a trail work / revegetation effort at Mount Rainier National Park.  Thanks to everyone that participated, and thanks Patrick for your leadership!

IMG_5773_5Several Bushwhackers and families began the activity Friday night around the campfire. Joining in the outing were Rachel and Mark H with Elizabeth and Clara, Patrick and Celese S with Ian, and Jim P. We fueled ourselves with s’mores for the next day's work ahead.

Saturday AM began with a dedication byIMG_5800_4 the Mt Rainier superintendant of the rebuilt Glacier Basin trail, which many club members have used on the approach to Camp Shurman. It was constructed with thousands of volunteer hours, after the original trail was wiped out by the flood of 1996. After the ceremony, Jim Powell headed out for trail maintenance on the Wonderland, the rest of us to Sunrise to reveg an area that had once been a drive in campground (above)

IMG_5785_7The Rainier staff trained us in planting alpine plants - you bust up the soil a bit, then install 7 plants per square foot, of mixed varieties (left). The plants came in flats of 49 - the greenhouse folks germinate thousands of seeds from the same area over the year, then grow themIMG_5788_6 in individual pots. It's a huge effort. The 50 + people on our volunteer crew that day put in 10,000 plants. Occasionally Clara would remind us - "NEVER GIVE UP!" Right on, Clara.

IMG_5795_3It was a beautiful day out, and great fun to join in with the folks for such an accomplishment. The plants have a 90% survival rate - we hope to get back to seeIMG_5799_2 the difference we made (right). It's a small step - it will actually take 10 years or more to return the area to its natural state.

We saw Jim again when we returned to camp. While we had spent the day digging holes with trowels, Jim had spent the day in a hole with a shovel. Nice effort! Be sure to think of Jim kindly as you walk the Wonderland Trail.

West MacMillan Spire

West MacChris K. led a fun scramble outing to West MacMillan Spire this past weekend.  This was the first official club outing to the Southern Pickets!  On the team along with Chris were Sandy W, Ronda B, Champagne X, and Laura A.

Chris said,

This team preformed great, everyone was strong and pulled together when needed, had a great time laughing at ourselves. I don't think there was a bad part of the trip.

All but one went to the summit.  She turned back when the scramble got a bit out of her comfort zone but she was almost there and waited at the saddle for the rest of the team. We got to kick a few steps and glisade a bit so that was great.

Here are some more photos.  Way to go Bushwhackers!

Fred R put together a great climb of Eldorado.  Fred reports:

All seven of us, Fred R. Patrick S. Elena, Lynne, Michael, Philip and Ken, were standing on the summit at 8,800 feet.  We had great views to Glacier Peak and Mt. Baker and Shuksan. Photos, ohs, ahs and congratulations ensued.  Weather was near perfect and we had the summit to ourselves.

Club members had another great day in the mountains on Saturday, February 26th.  A group went out snowshoeing on the P1010659.jpgat Blewitt Pass and enjoyed some amazing fresh powder and even some blue sky!  We had all this splendor to ourselves as we broke trail, enjoyed the views and good company.  Good times!

Bushwhacker Rainier Summit 2009.jpgWhat better way to celebrate the Forth of July than a successful summit on a beautiful day?  We had 8 Bushwhackers (3 first timers!) get up the mountain via the Emmons route.   We then got back to Camp Schurman in time to catch a nap before most of the fireworks north of the mountain.  Thanks to Chris K for leading everyone.

Mike M and Andy P headed up to Shuksan Arm on Mount Shuksan for some hiking yesterday.  Says Mike:
The mountains were so clear and detailed that you could see the individual crevasses and snowfields on Baker and Shuksan. The climb was certainly strenuous but goes down in my top ten of best outings.

Looks like they had a great time out there.  See more of Mike's pictures here.

Seth and Keith got out yesterday with a winter ascent of The Tooth.  Nice one!  Seth said,

We started the day wandering around in full-on whiteout. In the basin below the Tooth, it finally cleared, revealing four (yes four) other parties five to twenty minutes in front of us. I guess we should have gotten up a half-hour earlier? No worries, the sun came out and by the time we ate our lunch we were clear to climb.

One would expect it to be quite chilly out there.  Keith said,

It was far from a foregone conclusion with near-total whiteout conditions lower down and burr-cold up in the basin.  But the sun came out and we made it!

And Seth added,

Cold conditions, and windy at times, but the route was in fine shape. Summit City!

Way to get out there guys!
